Nahid Islam resigns from advisory post to join new political party
An advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Nahid Islam has resigned from the advisory council of the interim government. He announced his resignation after an informal meeting of the advisory council at the state guest house Jamuna on Tuesday (February 25) afternoon. The press wing of the chief advisor confirmed this information.
It is learned that Nahid Islam will be the convener of the new political party to be formed under the leadership of the youth next Friday (February 28). Rumors of his resignation had been heard for some time. He himself had indicated that he would resign from the advisory post before joining a political party.
Nahid Islam was one of the top leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement and played an active role in the movement demanding the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government. After the fall of the government on August 5 last year, he was sworn in as an advisor to the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Later, he was given the responsibility of the ministries of Information and Broadcasting and Posts and Telecommunications.
Meanwhile, the new political party will be formally launched at 3 pm on Friday at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital. The announcement was made by the committee's chief organizer, Sarjis Alam, at a press conference at the central office of the National Citizens Committee at Bangla Motor in the capital on Monday (February 24) evening.
It was informed at the press conference that a public opinion survey is underway to establish the new party, which has been conducted since February 5 under the title 'New Bangladesh in Your Eyes'. More than two lakh people have participated in the survey so far, and more than 30 names and symbols have been proposed.
Nahid Islam's name has been finalized as the convener of the new party. The name of National Citizens Committee Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain is also almost certain as the member secretary. It is expected that Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, and other movement coordinators will be in important positions in the party.
